2006 Cherokee County Special Olympics

We are pleased to announce that we will be helping the Cherokee County Special Olympics with their annual Track and Field event again this year. The competition will take place at Sequoyah High School on April 18, 2006 and will feature athletes from all over Cherokee County. The Special Olympics will even have their own Olympic village set up for the participants. The spirit and enthusiasm of these kids is incredible and we are looking forward to a very special experience.

SECBN will support the effort by providing both a monetary donation and volunteers for the day of the event. While our primary function is to provide business building referrals for our members, we believe that our ongoing support of our community through involvement in projects like the Special Olympics is an important role for us as well. A role that we take great pride and pleasure in playing.

For information about volunteering for this project, contact:
Mike Cooke at 770-714-3820.

The anticipation was obvious in their faces as they lined up at the starting line. The time had come for the big race. The one they had all trained so hard for. They all dug in and readied for the start. When the gun sounded, everyone came out as hard as they could. The finish line only 50 yards away. But, one young man lost his footing in his first steps off the line and tumbled to the ground. In his pain and frustration he began to cry. One of the other runners heard his sobs and stopped in his tracks. When he realized a fellow runner had fallen, he started back to his aid, calling out to the others. One by one, every one of the competitors stopped and returned to the fallen boy. They gathered around and helped him to his feet. Arm in arm, the group jogged the length of the track and crossed the finish line as one. Everybody won that day, participants and witnesses alike. Where, but the Special Olympics, could one witness such caring and compassion between competitors?

A great way to cultivate your network is to actively participate in or attend community events. The following events will include participation by members of the SECBN.
